Anointing the Sick
The Anointing of the Sick is perhaps the least understood of the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic tradition. Many think it is given only when a person is in immediate danger of death. That is not the true purpose of this sacrament.
The Church teaches that the sacrament is to be celebrated at any time of : (a) sickness, or (b) advanced age.
Sickness is not limited to a physical illness. It also includes the serious mental stress that people experience in daily life.
The sacrament is also intended for those with advanced age whether or not they are experiencing some form of sickness.
So the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is offered at St. Joseph the Worker on a regular basis to all who are suffering from a serious sickness or advanced age in order to bring God’s presence into their lives at a time when they are in need of healing and comfort.
An important aspect of providing this sacrament is to do it along with the support of the Parish community. The sacrament is offered twice monthly on the 1st and 3rd Sundays following one of the regular Masses. In addition, during the Fall of the year and during Lent a special Sunday afternoon Mass is held for those wishing to receive the sacrament in the company of their families and friends.
